Vigor Mortis

This morning I received VIGOR MORTIS, a collection of photographs by Javier Gálvez and Bruno Jacobs, published by Ediciones El Ojo de Buey in Madrid, for which I wrote a brief introduction, which is published therein in Spanish and French. The original English version can be found below.

Elogio de la Pereza

When we are young and exalting in the strange eons we inhabit, believing them to be timeless, we can easily despatch Death with a single bullet to the heart or even the squirt of a carefully aimed water pistol. Even Death may die… But we wake from our dream and find that it is only some dull religion that has fallen. We need to clear our heads and take a walk, with Death as a close companion.

In this stroll though Death’s stone domain, we encounter angels with heavy wings bearing unreadable instruction books; the broken and incomplete, decapitated, cut in half, without hands or feet; a lost sole treading softly over a lion’s spouse; a ladder left for the dead who rise from the tomb to climb to false paradises, as if Pompeian sleep might preserve us here for eternity, in an afterlife garden of perpetual retirement, fixed within a photograph within a photograph.

Even Death may die? On the contrary, it is premature to write an epitaph, except perhaps our own, as here we have photographic evidence that Death is in very good health, and of a humorous and philosophical disposition.
